Scientists at the Gran Sasso facility in central Italy have discovered a particle that travels faster than the speed of light. The particles is called neutrinos. If this is true, then Einstein's famous E=mc² equation is off by quite a lot. As you know this is Einstein's theory of relativity. At the time, Einstein established the speed of light as the cosmic speed limit and all physics laws was based on the speed of light. If neutrinos really do exist, and they do travel at a speed faster than the speed of light, our understanding of physics is about to change greatly!
Scientists said that a neutrino launched from a particle accelerator close to Geneva to another laboratory 454 miles away in Italy traveled 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light. The error space is plus or minus 10 nanoseconds making it clear that neutrinos do travel at a faster speed than light.
This is quite shocking to the science community and the rest of the world, because all physics laws was based on Einstein's theory. If it is proven wrong, it will greatly change our understanding of this world. For me, this was quite a surprise when I saw this on the news, but I'm glad humans is figuring out the world we live in step by step. :)
